Game impressions: Dead Space

dead-space-05

Well, if you ever seen Aliens (1, 2, 3), Dead Space wont look that strange to you since the the beginning. I mean, there’s this big mining ship, and there’s a coms blackout, and you’re a technician sent to repair it… It’s got alien/monster horde written all over it. But despite this not so original premise, Dead Space is a very surprising game (for me), I don’t know if this is due to the fact that I do all my gaming on pc, and pc gamers are more condescending on the animations departments, but Dead Space impresses a lot by how “real” and fluid Isaac (the main character) looks, we can almost feels his weight, the sounds help here too, with him breathing heavily inside that helmet making us realize that equipment mustn’t be the most comfortable thing one can wear (and actually, no one else in the game does).

Dead Space mechanics are quite cool and interesting, especially the zero gravity sections. There’s also the surprising interface, and to me it’s only flaw is the sometimes cumbersome to navigate inventory (that may be because I’m used to more robust pc games inventory systems). I understand most of the way the game works was thought so that console users can also play it and not be ripped apart by the monster/alien horde, which brings me to some flaws I find in the game. I find it linear, very very linear, I think redwood was not aiming to make a non linear experience tho.

So resuming:

Awesome animations and mechanics (even if sometimes oversimplified).

Excellent audio and interface.

It’s not a game you’ll play for the story, for the story is linear and very predictable.

It’s very entertaining for the first game run, but doesn’t have any replay value, even with the military armor you can only get after going for a second run.
